Chicago: The Gwen Hotel

I became a mom in 2010 and from that moment, I made it my mission to make as many memories with my daughter as possible, knowing she was the only miracle that I would be blessed with. She absolutely LOVES to travel and has such a passion for it and we always do whatever we can to encourage it! Before the pandemic, she asked us to go to a “big city” because she wanted to feel the energy (haha! Those were her exact words).

This might be an unpopular opinion but Chicago is my favorite big city in the country (especially in the summer). The inclusive spirit, award-winning food scene, vibrant neighborhoods and iconic attractions make it the absolute BEST.

The hardest factor for me was deciding where to stay for this trip because there are SO many outstanding neighborhoods and luxury hotels downtown. Because this was my daughter’s first trip (AND WE WERE SEEING COLDPLAY AT SOLDIER FIELD…OMG!)! We chose The Gwen Hotel because it is stunning and we love the iconic Art Deco style of the space and its location to literally everything!

I will definitely be writing another blog post with our mom and daughter trip with details of everything we did later but The Gwen DESERVES a moment because we would 10/10 recommend a stay there!

Why We Loved It:

The location of a hotel is everything and this one is connected to Nordstrom…so there’s that. We were able to stroll across a skywalk and then BAM we were in our favorite store. I will say that is one perk of my daughter getting older…she loves to shop! This hotel is also within walking distance of the Magnificent Mile and some fabulous restaurants.

The Staff!
The staff at the hotel were AMAZING. Thank you so much for providing us with the BEST service. We were greeted with smiling faces when we checked in at 9pm on a Friday night. We were offered complimentary waters and taken quickly to our rooms.

We ordered room service (burgers, fries, salad, dessert…THE WORKS) and it arrived hot from another staff member with a smiling face. We went to bed with full bellies and full hearts haha! Each encounter we had with the staff was positive and welcoming…we can’t say enough!

The Room!
The room was pristine and was plenty spacious! There are a few things that made this room exceptional for me. First, the bathroom had a standup shower with perfect water pressure and a separate jacuzzi tub. We didn’t use the tub but I was thrilled to not have to swing my legs up and over and I hate fiddling with shower curtains lol. Second, the actual toilet was in its own spot. THANK YOU FOR THE PRIVACY. Thirdly, the hotel is equipped with one of those closets that light up and open with lots of space so your things can stay out of sight. Fourth and final, the bed was comfortable and the linens were perfect and billowy. These might be small things for some of you but these are HUGE for me.

The Brunch!
My daughter requested we eat here all 3 days because she could not get enough of her breakfast waffles. I will say they were delicious. I opted for fruit, yogurt, croissant and coffee…all delightful! Again, the waitstaff was attentive and timely. The terrace is also a great spot to eat brunch or have cocktails at night.
